Rug Hooking Magazine Celebrates 25 Years

August 15 , 2015

Northbrook, IL – Rug Hooking Magazine celebrated our 25th anniversary in August 2015. To commemorate the occasion, Rug Hooking Magazine, with the help of Kathy Wright (the director of Rug Hooking Week at Sauder Village), put together a Wool Bomb tree. Featuring 12” x 18” leaves created by nearly 200 artists whose previous work has been included in the magazine, the tree stood 15 feet high and 12 feet wide.

The tree was on display during Rug Hooking Week at Sauder Village in 2015. Because of the tree’s fine craftsmanship and embodiment of the rug hooking sense of community, as well its reverence to the Great Oak Tree (a special landmark for rug hookers in the Sauder Heritage Inn at Sauder Village) the Wool Bomb tree was awarded the Sauder Award at the end of Rug Hooking Week.

This isn’t the first time that Rug Hooking Magazine has participated in a hooked rug-related community event. Back in July 2011, Rug Hooking Magazine sponsored the first ever-rug on a barn quilt trail. The rug square, designed after one of Magdalena Briner Eby’s hooked rugs, now hangs on the Tuscarora State Forest Fire Headquarters in Pennsylvania.
